This is the message I wrote when I posted this on my Facebook page. I didn’t know Penny well enough to take up space at his Memorial Service today. But he appeared in my life 12 years ago and made a huge impression, if Penny didn’t get his George Bailey moment from me in this life, i want to make sure he gets it now.

Penny came briefly into my life at a truly devastating moment and he was, literally, the face of God for me when I was heart broken and afraid. I now live happily with my family just blocks from where Penny grew up, and I hope that he is somewhere out there now, feeling the bliss that he so gorgeously sought in his time on Earth. I know that when I hear a hilarious, snarky comment on the absurdities of life in my head, it could be Penny whispering in my ear.
